Understanding fascia
Fascia is the wrapping, packing and insulating connective tissue of the body. It is continuous throughout the body and is found beneath that skin. Its main functions are to attach, stabilise, enclose and separate muscles.
It interpenetrates and surround all organs, muscles, bones and nerve fibers, creating a unique environment for body systems functioning.
In other words, think of it like glad wrap that wraps around the muscles in your body.
There are many different types of fascia ranging from;
- superficial
- deep
- visceral
- parietal
The main types that are treated manually are the Superficial and the Deep.
How does our fascia contribute to our pain?
It is believed that our fascia can tighten, which may result in constricting our muscles, decreasing blood supply, causing pain and decreasing range of movement. It is not known why fascia can become tight but one speculation is that overuse, disease, trauma, infection, inactivity and poor postural awareness may contribute to dysfunctions of the fascia.
The role of fascia: Wrapping, Supporting & Stabilizing the body
The fascias form an unbroken sequence of tissues running from the head to the foot and from the outside to the inside. At no point is there any interruption in the fascia, it simply takes over from the bone structures to fulfil its role.
Present at every level of the body, it envelops every structure, muscle, organ, nerve and vessel, and also insinuates itself inside them to form their matrix and support.
It is therefore the envelope that shapes and moulds the anatomical form; it does not even stop at the level of the cell, which it bathes in its fundamental substance.
The fascia can be summed up as a superficial envelope covering the whole body, which divides many times to become deeper and deeper.
Given its omnipresence in the body, fascia plays a fundamental role in human physiology. This role is expressed in a number of ways:
- Posture Maintenance
- Support for the organs, guaranteeing their anatomical integrity
- Support for a muscular system that will be able to lean on it and develop its full effectiveness
- It provides the forces that enable the body to be coordinated and set in motion (via the fascial chains)
- It plays a role in absorbing stress and protecting against shocks
- It plays an essential role in exchanges and defences
This is where the first defence barriers come into play following an attack. It can be in action before any intervention from the general system. It is therefore capable of making autonomous decisions, which is why it is referred to as the peripheral brain.
Support role
Maintains the anatomical integrity of the individual and supports the vascular and lymphatic nervous system.
Protective role
Maintains the physical and physiological integrity of the human body.
Role as a shock absorber
The fascia's elasticity allows it to absorb the stresses on the body.
Haemodynamic role
The vascular and lymphatic systems are inseparable from the fascial system.
Defence role
The purpose of connective tissue is to restore normal defence functions.
Communication and exchange role
Connective tissue, and through it the fundamental substance, is in close contact with the cellular elements of the human body.
Fascias, and by extension connective tissue, are present in all parts of the body. They link the various organs and parts of the body together in an unbroken continuum. Anatomical study has shown us that there is never an interruption between different tissues, but that they all link together to achieve perfect functional harmony.
The various studies carried out on this subject show that it is the primary guarantor of the body’s good functional state and therefore of good health.
